a reminiscense of another end of summer

Fallnote

Fallnote

The red ripe rowanberries
underfoot
'phut' to squashy stains
digging into the soles of heavier shoes now
unkerneled the skins splay sidewards
whitish innards going to ground.

High from the juniper's tangled spikishness
floats the sailing skein
that glistening traveling thread
made by spiders that have left their transport
hanging in midair
and departing they find
a hiding-place before the winter comes.

That certain chill is in the air
that high ice-blue awareness of russet apples glowing
now sun-heated to ripeness
about to be baked in some autumnal oven
unfired since the summer came
cold ashes colder than death.

And when the glorious morning
throws mist-dispersed light
against my dawnside window frame
I sense the dew and hasten to winter by the frail
A time of innosense feigned
sins of life and living
congealed to memories in snow.
