A Beach Walk

I walk along the flat of the shore,
footprints etched into the sand
that stretches like a desert
far out in front of me.
Except here, the spray
and foam creep, eroding
the landscape. I care not
as stones skim and dogs
run, chasing after tattered
balls, sending flocks of
gulls complaining into
the pale blue sky.
Hands deep inside my pockets
collar raised against the wind
my eyes smart in the
bright light that only
Autumn sun can do.
Once there were two of us
my steps in your steps
my hand in your pocket;
two lips that kissed
the matching pair
and laughed until
tears formed in our eyes.
Now I trudge these
weary ways alone
remembering summer
when we shared picnics
and swam, daring the
other far from the shore.
Summer left, now autumn here
the breeze is fierce
and the roar, comes not from
the sea but from my heart alone.
