When we have been damaged...

Expect nothing

Don't forget, I am a wreck'
'I dont want to disappoint you'
'I can't do all I want'
'I am hurt, have wounds, am damaged goods,'
'don't expect anything from me'

When we speak, I listen
and mark the words
hidden in the static on the line
within your convoluted defense
I hear the layout of your prison.

I don't expect the alabaster skin
of twenty years
nor the unmodulated garish laughter of a teen
not the unmarked unfurrowed hand
nor the plastic regality
of a hollow babe.

I expect barbed wire to unravel
cut and roll away
bars to lift you over
cuffs to cut apart
chains of the mind to break open.

You are not your prison
nor is it a remake of your bonds
that challenges me
I am not a builder
the only solitary confinement I want for you
is being so alone and close to you
that you feel truly free.

Should you then dare
to flaunt the face of your encarceration
I'll be on the outside ready to throw the ladder
over the final hurdle
and my hand will be there for the leap.

You need not try to impress me
your value lies not in what you achieve
brave attempts to be
what you think you once were
and therefore always must be
I want to meet you as you are now
and in that meeting become more of my real self.

So I am not expecting anything
just someone very dear.

Come Friend as you are.

Come as you are: As simple as challenging, if not provoking. Helpful poem on getting one important thing right. Thanks, René
