..at the final stop of someones life..
In memory
The endless succession of days
flows like a river over our heads,
fleetingly the past hides the future
and various memories slip
unbidden through the backdoor.
And some of those who left
abruptly, suddenly had no time
to say farewell in healing ways.
So we sift our memories of them
the way a gold-digger pans
the sludge of the creek.
Trusting he'll find
one gold-bearing seam.
And some is washed away
and some is sifted once again
and after all the mean and misery
there is the gold, there are
the nuggets of companionship,
moments of utter trust.
So brother of mine
You left too soon
And far too fast
But in years to come
I will find again and again
The golden nuggets, priceless gems
In the sludge of time
and on the bottom
of each sorrow filled creek.
The effort is richly repaid
You left gold enough
For time and time's time.
