memories of what might have been

County Fair Memoirs

Crape paper streamers
Balloons on line stringers
Laughter and fun
A County Fair begun
Clowns on wooden stilts
Grannies displaying their quilts
Babies in strollers sweat
As the sun is starting to set
Lights glimmer then glare
As hometown soldiers stare
At the girls in short shorts showing their bums
Strolling along giggling, popping their gum
Barkers bellowing out "Come Here
Take aim and you'll win this year!"
Pop guns shooting at wooden ducks
And kiddies riding around in toy trucks
Men in rolled up sleeves
Raise their arms to give a heave
As they blast the mallet on the scale
Hoping to ring the strongest man bell
Candy red apples gooey and good
Make the carnival be as it should
Cotton Candy swirled on a stick
Dissolves to sugar with each bite, each lick
Warm humid summer fair nights
Making the world seem alright
The Ferris Wheel a place for a kiss
When it stops at the top is pure bliss
For young lovers and old alike
It's the magic of infinite delight
The sounds, the sights, the smells, the feel
The tastes of the County Fair are so vividly real
That one might think life in small towns is sublime
It's just the break from hard laboring time
To enjoy the thrills,
To show off skills
To taste Aunt Betty's Jam,
To listen to the town band
Play John Phillip Sousa's marching tunes
While the Barbershop Quartet croons,
"Back Home Again In Indiana..."
I buy my first chocolate frozen banana
And after one bite I offer it to you
You tell me, 'no thanks my popcorn will do.'
So here we are just you and just me
Fulfilling a dream that will never be.
