The most fun I've ever had being insulted

Luke and Mac Dis Mammy

"This town looks like Sellwersbug," observed 3 year old granson Mac
as we drove on our way home. We had enjoyed several hours on Hardy Lake in the "Bat" boat and on the beach playing Batman and Wobin in the sand and muddy lake water.

"This is Austin," I informed him so he would know the next time we mentioned Hardy Lake he would know it was near Austin.

"No, Mammy! This wealy is Sellwersbug!" He insisted, mistaking this small hamlet for our equally small home town.

Though there was certainly a resemblance, I had to tell him the truth.

"No, Mac. This is Austin. Sellersburg is 30 miles away."

"No Mammy! Mac exclaimed. "I know fings."

"Yes, you do know some things, but you don't know everything," I told him.

Then from the 4 year old sitting in the back seat, "Mammy, listen to me! I want to tell you something. You do not know evweething! And Macky knows a lot of stuff," said Luke in defense of his cousin.

"Yeah, Mammy! I know wots of stuff! I know everweefing you taught me!
This is not Austin. It is Sellwersbug!" Mack proclaimed, fueled by his partner's support.

"Macky is weal, weal smart! Luke informed me. "And you don't know all about Austin and Sellwasbug! We know evweething and you don't!"

And so began the derision of Mammy by two little boys that lasted all the way home. The two were playing adult and doing it very well. I decided to play along because, I enjoyed witnessing their young minds at work. And, it really was just play. Also, I was learning how much what we say and do impacts the young ones around us.

I know they said some things
that children shouldn't say
they didn't show respect
but I couldn't help but play

They used their little minds
and thought of all they'd heard
adults around them say
from praise to disparaging word

They presented me their case
and oh they were so smart
insult me yes they could
because they own their Mammy's heart
