a poem to a friend
we all choose our own battlesyou seem more focused on stalemates
not so much facing defeat
as standing chin up and grinning at what's going to damage you most
next
like you're doing your best to make sure the next step placed is on the trigger of a landmine
like it's too much work to hurt yourself
so you open the door to invite in those who can do all the hard work for you
and after the last bullet casing has hit pavement
after the last bomb blast has echoed over the ruins of what's left
you can stand there and know you still have the strength to rebuild
because you won't just tell yourself this
and so you place hurdles in your own path
meticulously located at every beat of your too big heart
still beating just ahead of you
racing to catch up with your own pulse
you're running as fast as your body will carry you
out of breath
out of patience
out of the stamina needed to finish this race
but you cross that finish line, as always
panting with tears streaming down your cheeks
heart broken just a little bit more
but you still stand there
chin up and grinning
waiting for whatever you might walk into next
