. . . some thoughts . . .
While making the preparations for the Earth Hour (candles, pen, paper and water) it dawn on me that I will be amongst those that were ”there” from the beginning and that is so exciting and heartwarming! I am a part of this, like everybody else(those that participate, those that consciously chose to not participate and those that don’t participate because they are not aware and didn’t have the time to make a choice).
I remembered what the Russian poet, Osip Mandelstam, allegedly said: “ I have no personal memory, only cultural memory”. Partially that is correct and the Earth Hour is a part of my cultural memory, I actively, willingly participate and not just as a passive receiver of the “cultural memory”. A memory that can be consider as one of the positive effects - of the more conscious globalization. A positive effect that is being proofed through photography and various rapports - few minutes after the earth hour or during the earth hour. Well, that is what it means to live in the age of information.
If I don’t see it I don’t believe it so why shall I do something that others won’t do? Hmm that is another problem *Woops* 20:22 I better turn off my PC and switch off the lights!! It will be fun!
– See you under the flickering flame!
*lighting the candles*
Yes! Its 20:31 now, it feels good and I have to set my alarm clock to 21:30 and *turn off my mobile*. Although “we need proof” after the Earth Hour(newscast, photos and so on) before and during the Earth Hour we(who participate) believe in people’s good will, genuine intention! That feels even better. I like the idea that there are people who care and keep their promise. People around the globe, united as citizens of the world and representatives of their specific geographical position. Aaah . . . I can hear the birds that fly around the buildings, think if I could hear that everyday . . . hmm another thought worth thinking . . .
As I mentioned earlier, the Earth Hour is a part of my cultural memory, what I am going to give to the children of the future, as their cultural heritage. Ah! Yes! Now I remembered John Lennon’s song *Imagine* and I specifically recall : “ Imagine all the people living for today” this is what is happening right now! We understand that every minute countS, each second can make a difference and it is us who will make the difference, right now, no matter what the Book of History tells about "us"!
I will assume that some people take this golden chance and watch the night sky . . . the light pollution is a problem, IDA International Dark -Sky Association try to raise awareness – amongst other things. Have you ever had the chance to really enjoy the beauty of the night? Listen to the silence? Look at the twinkling stars and the moon? Hmm . . . I just observed that the supermarket across my house haven’t switched off their lights. Hmm. . . and they advertise that they have *went green* but partially that was my responsibility as well – as an active citizen of the world and participant of the Earth Hour 2009. Lesson learned, next year I will make sure to talk to my neighbors’ and the owner of the supermarket. It would be a great idea if the customers could shop under the candlelight! Hehe and they could give flowers as well *lol* no I won’t say that:D
Hey I better seize the moment! I will go out and watch the stars!*see you after two – three minutes!*
While I was out I observed that the street lights are on. It would be even greater if we could turn them off but I remembered The Simpsons Episode were Lisa convinces the Mayor to turn off the city lights and guess how that went:D Oh boy it would probably be the golden opportunity to increased criminal activities. Aha! Yes I do have a cultural memory that helps me solve individual problems faster! So I have an individually adjust cultural memory. There. That sounds better! With that being out of my thoughts I will continue my thought – adventures during Earth Hour 2009.
Oh! I almost forgot! I couldn’t see the stars because of the cloudy sky but I watched and listened to the birds.
While I was out there, it occurred to me that if the governments of the world enacted an obligatory law to automatically switch off the lights every day for an hour I would protest! I really appreciate that I have been given the opportunity to make a statement with my action! It is time for us (citizens) to stop being the children of society and politics. We are the society and our lifestyles affect the decision making and taking and vice versa of course.
This is the third year the Earth Hour takes place. I genuine wish and hope that it will become a tradition! It will emotionally bond the citizens of the world beyond the imperfection of categorizations and of course reinforce their belief on doing so (switch off the light according to one’s own ability to judge) make it a part of our everyday lives. But! I sincerely hope that this future tradition won’t become like a summer diet, a once used gym membership or Christmas or meditation and so on.
I promise myself that I will switch off the lights and almost all electrical devices everyday or at least once a week and once a year join the rest of the world on Earth Hour day.
Well, that was it *Snuff the candles and enjoys the silence*
Thank you for wanting to read my thoughts:)
