The Time That We Had

Some guys would be angry, some guys would be mad.
Some would be tearful, some would be sad.
Darlin' I'm happy, yes I am glad.
I'll forever be thankful for the time that we had.

It wasn't right for you, I understand.
The last thing you wanted at this time was a man.
You've put up with more than you could stand.
Things just did not work out quite like I planned.

I'm sorry I made such a pest of myself.
I just wanted you and no one else.
I've retired my heart, set it on the shelf.
Time spent with you was better than wealth.

It wasn't right for you, I understand.
The last thing you wanted at this time was a man.
You've put up with more than you could stand.
Things just did not work out quite like I planned.

Things do get better as time marches on by.
I'm no longer heartbroke, I no longer cry.
I think of you and let out a sigh.
Thinking of you gives me a natural high.

It wasn't right for you, I understand.
The last thing you wanted at this time was a man.
You've put up with more than you could stand.
Things just did not work out quite like I planned.

Sometimes late at night, you still haunt my dreams.
The perfect woman, or so it would seem.
Your gorgeous smile and bright eyes that just beam.
I can't help believing we'd have made a great team.

But it wasn't right for you, and I understand.
I'm just destined to be a lonely man.
I've enjoyed alone more than I can stand.
It seems guys like me just aren't in demand.

This reminds me of the saying "Better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all". We can take the good memories and move on... more easily said than put into practice though eh? Nice write. :-)

Well JB, I see why my poem hit home with you because your's hit home with me. Life is an adventure with something always around the corner--maybe good, maybe not so good-but always interesting. Thank God for poetry and Poetbay; we can write our hearts out and still keep writing more. : ) kathy
