True story.

Ice Breaker

Things had changed- being apart for five weeks of vacation could just do that to people. The awkward conversation ensued. Then silence for a while. Suddenly, he noticed a shiny, thin-banded watch on her wrist as she went to pull her hair up. It had a black face and what looked to be rhinestones to mark the hours.

"Wow, that's a really nice watch... Is it new?" He said timidly, unsure if he was starting plain conversation or just saying something completely weird for the sake of saying something.

"Hm?- Oh this? Thanks... I, uh, found it."

"Really?... Where?"

"...In the Adriatic Sea."

He looked at her with an expression somewhere between complete surprise and complete disbelief, although, they seemed to fit the same description somehow.

"No way!" He nearly screamed this in her face.

"Way."

A big smile came across her face, for two reasons. One: she was glad the silence was broken. Two: she knew she'd have to tell this story one day or another.

"And it still works?"

"Yea, funny thing. I haven't switched the battery yet- it's the same one that was in when I found it."

"But really? You just FOUND it? In the sea?"

"Yea. I was with my second cousins and their parents in Croatia. We were going to the beach by our marina and as I was wading in, I noticed something shiny in the water. So I bent down to take a closer look, and sure enough, it was this watch."

"And no one claimed it or anything?"

"Well no. There was no one there. It was, like, nine in the morning. I don't even know why WE were there at that time. Anyway, I showed my cousins and they told me to keep it. Of course, they were fairly stunned as well, but what can I say?"

He didn't look at her in disbelief as before, he just soaked in the words that came out of her mouth.

"Huh. Well, that's pretty cool."

And then silence.
