When I Am Old
When I am Old I Will Wear My Medals
(Prompted by and with apologies to Jenny Joseph)
When I am old
I will wear my medals and white trainers
I will put my walking stick in the spokes of anyone who cycles on the pavement
And I will sit on a bench in the sunshine in the cemetery
among my friends and think of the good times we had together
My smelling of wee will be covered by liberal applications of Deep Heat
I will try and remember my great-grand children's names
and also my own
I will spill Horlicks down my pyjamas at bed time
And wear a scarf instead of a tie
I will fart in public and make lewd remarks to the young ladies
who bring my meals on wheels
I'll shake the surplus junk mail on the floor when I buy my TV Times
I will drive my buggy round the supermarket at high speed
knocking displays over and children on school holidays out of the way
In the summer I shall wear socks with my sandals
and khaki shorts
I will bore the pants off uninterested people
with incorrect details of my operations
I will not spend my time wondering what an iPod or a Nintendo is
but spend it wondering if my family will ring me
I don't have to practice these things
I am doing them now.
