Guiding star
Sacred blessing
son
daughter
mother
father
So small, so young
and now so old
Between this
these many years
and no time
Your guiding star this
first and last poem
you must leave behind
to find your own life
Destroy every word!
no single thing or phrase remain:
not breath, heartbeat, song, or kiss
Give each to the fire!
to the stars in darkness
sunshine in summer
leaves in autumn.
This poem is the least of all your things;
much less than your smile,
less sad than tears,
not useful as strength,
more frail than weakness.
But before and after all these things
comes this poem
to say simply that
before and after all these things
comes you.
Brightest,
you are not anything said or saying -
the star only shines when the poem burns
