This is a story made up by me for my grandchildren Joey and Daisy one night as they lay in my bed waiting for sleep. I just put it in poetic form here.

The Tale of the Colorful Dove

Once upon a time the world was white as snow
Then along came a dove the colors of a rainbow
He flew into the great white tree and there he sat
The tree turned to all the colors just like that
There were browns and blues, purples and reds,
Yellows and oranges, and pattens stripes and plaids.
Each leaf a different color; each limb a pattern of its own
the trunk was alive with stripes of each color shown.

Now along came the wind and blew the leaves to the ground
They came swirling, tumbling, spinning around
And when they finally landed here and there
The white of the land was quickly colored shared
Now you can see a multi-hued cat, dog, frog, or duck
Or maybe you'll see a rainbow pot filled with colorful luck.
And if you should step anywhere on a colored leaf
You will change into the color there with some pattern in relief.

When the world was full of color and no white could be found
The rain came pouring, running the colors all to the ground
The water was full of every color known to mankind
And some that could only be seen by those who are blind
Colors, colors, pattens, stripes and plaids
All the artwork was alive on everything-- even moms and dads.
But as the rain washed it all away, each was left with one
Color to put on display.

Flowers, bushes, grass, dirt, birds and sky
All had their colors-- some bold and some kind of shy.
The waters were bubbling in all the beauty they did hold
Until the sun came out shining brilliantly gold.

And as I looked into the evening sky,
I saw a miracle when the dove flew by.
For the dove was pure white with color? No!
But there in the heavens was the most beautiful rainbow.

So if ever you wondered about where colors were born
They were carried to earth on a very special miracle morn
By a multicolored Heaven-sent dove
To show us God's creative mind and his wonderful love.

Dear Kathy, I came across this and read it again, with as much absorption and delight as before. It is a lovely story, with myriads of meaning to it, with so many layers of truth enveloped in fantasy... weaving a fine tapestry of a fairy tale... I just loved it.

Kathy,

This is an excellent poem that I know your grandkids loved. It takes a innocent mind to write something like this for an innocent child. I love it
and you my friend.

Dear Kathy, what a lovely story and so imaginatively told, the metaphor of colour to describe your world was such a brilliant idea!

Sometimes, children in their innocent demands for bed-time story bring out such creative streaks in you. Isn't is amazing, what love can do to bring creativity out in you?

(((Hugs)))
Love,
Zoya

PS I am not on the much these days, just missing you guys! How have you been?

Love,
Zoya

Lovely poem, Kathy, in fact I think it's brilliant. The fantasy is flowing and I wish I was a little boy again with the whole future in front of me.

Eli The PoetBay support member heart!
This is wonderful Kathy and I'm sure that your grandchildren adore it too.

I have done this with my daughter, and often - through much questioning-asking about the parts that need to be filled in - she puts her own imagination into the stories as well.
