A Snowflake Dream
If inside every snowflake was a playmateJust waiting to surprise me with a smile
I'd set out jars and bowls and trays to catch them
And stay out in the cold a little while
And as I'd sit and rub my arms and shiver
One thousand friends would fall down from the sky
They'd burst out of their little snowy eggshells
And ask me for a towel and something dry
Then once their noses stopped looking so rosy
I'd talk to them and learn each of their names
And marvel over all my new companions
Red hair, blue eyes, short tall—no two the same
Together we would run into the kitchen
And tunnel through the spoons and pots and pans
We'd bake a million cakes and pies and cookies
And leave behind a mess and sticky hands
New friends would pour into the house to join us
And while we waited for the doorbell's ding
A happy girl would play the grand piano
And everyone would dance and laugh and sing
Then finally we'd sit down by the fire
Content with all our newfound winter friends
We'd sip hot drinks and talk and watch the snow fall
And smile as the day came to an end
At night, our bellies full and eyelids heavy
We'd pile all my blankets in a heap
And laying there together, warm like puppies
We'd close our eyes and flutter off to sleep.
