Words are the cages for untamed thoughts, but why must a poet be scruffy?

Dress-code for poets

 Some feel
that poetry
must be honest-to-filth
in order to be true
to life

so they use the language that befits
their lurid company
in the wild jungles
of humanity
down to the last bit of sleaze

 They forget
that poetry
is a rescue-raft
not a mudsucker

and as the words we bandy about
betray the wardrobe of our mind
we might as well dress in tattered rags
the filthy language is
a giveaway dress-code

But the words we use
should fit our ideals
not betray them
or overlay them
with ignoble waste

Brilliant expository or in today's unfortunate language (modified)

I get the feeling that codes are like scales, relative yet transposable.
We speak to those we love the most or least or respect the most or least with the extreme ends of the scales. Some of us are raised around people who are privileged enough to have access to linguistic laureates, others to much less so we must make do with these tools. The young are often criticized for language but they are learning from radio stations and recording companies owned by older generations who are willing to make a quick dollar. Poets reflect society, not necessarily a heartening thought.
Thought provoking writing. Thanks Teddy,
Nick
