Street Child

A street child
with diamonds in her eyes,
a smile that flashes brilliance,
the resolute challenge
of a life too harsh.

Agility is paramount to survival,
swift, sleight of hand
like a three card trick
she works her magic on the streets.

Sleeping like a feline,
sprawled, but ready to spring
forth into the unknown
underworld to defend herself.

Does she realise she's been robbed?
stealing without conscience,
no boundaries hold her back
as she watches her own.

Who stole a childhood?

There are many things that can result in a child growing up too fast. Tragedy, desperation, cruelty. Among others. And all three can be found on the street.

Beautifully written, poignantly drawn. Excellent.

I'm touched by your poem and speechless, honestly. I can only reiterate that it's beautifully expressed and indeed very special. I've known many homeless kids in my youth, and this brings back memories in their honor. Thanks.

A very impressive poem. :-) I love the last line. It's awful when kids are forced to grow up too fast...and yet...it's far too common in some areas. :-(
Great topic to ponder.

Hugs,
Dee

Consciousness of the threat of human nature is costly, specially when condensed into the few years of youth.
I agree with Jim, this is a special poem. Thanks for sharing it.

This is a special poem, and your line "Agility is paramount to survival" linked to the theme of the feline child takes this poem to a sharp edge. I really like it, and admire the insight it shows.

A great poem, Shells. Reminds of a conversation I had with a girl who had to become a woman all to soon, a few years ago. I will some day write of the meeting , and post it hear.
