Memories

Memories of long ago are easy to recall
The first day when with tearful eye I trotted off to school
Of conkers and gob stoppers, and marbles by the score
Of bombs and air raid shelters a countryside at war
Reminiscences in profusion
From the recesses of my brain
The mind rejects the bad thoughts
The good ones still remain
The friends collected on the way
Are easy to recall
Of Christmases and holidays
I'm remembering them all
Of that first date of that first kiss
Those placid days of teenage bliss
A kaleidoscope past half closed eyes
Memories easy now to visualise
But with these thoughts of yesteryear
There's one thing puzzles me
With all these recollections
Why can't I just remember
What I had for tea.

Hey toonist...you asked me for a critique...
Who are you kidding? How could I dare
to critique sheer genius

your humbled buddy...

I envy you that you recall the good people. IN my case it's all the villains that loom large. Maybe I'll learn to forgive them.

This poem flowed like a theraputic stream, finding it's way. Yet also the truth of words you so adequately placed together, rung memories in my head, also. Thankyou for sharing!

Regards,
John.

Like the best humorists you set the reader up beautifully, leading him along to the unexpected "punch line". And like the best humor, it is true. There is a kindness though in our getting older that it is the short-term memories that fade first, leaving us a lifetime of the ones that made us who we are.

In the scheme of things I'd say the memories you can recall outweigh those you don't by a country mile. After all, who wants to remember bad things, and, really, does it matter what you had for tea?

cheers, long life!
