Lessons for life...

A Little Child's Quest

Oh! Mr. Coconut Tree what can I learn from thee?
With a firm yet soft voice he said,
All around me is water salty and marshy
Yet I give a tender drink to all hungry and thirsty.
Dear child, even if harsh words are spewed on you by all of mankind
Speak only words thoughtful and kind.

Grandma Banyan Tree what wisdom can I get from thee?
She ruffled her voluminous skirt and said in a hoarse voice,
Little one, as little as you are
Build your life on the pillar
Of love and love alone
It will support you when you are old and woebegone

Dear Mrs. Mango Tree what can I learn form thee?
But Mrs Mango said with an affectionate smile,
Sweet little child, hungry you must be
First eat some ripe yellow mangoes till you are filled with glee.
I had already learnt from her a beautiful lesson -
Share whatever you have with no forethought or hesitation.

Uncle Pine Tree what lofty teaching do you have for me?
Uncle bent down and in a whistling voice said to me,
Dear one, the sky is not the limit
Even so keep your feet ever firm on the ground while reaching for it.
Remember child, be patient and keep calm
When at your doorstep is an angry storm.

Finally I went to Ms. Jacaranda and said to her,
Miss you are always so lively and gay, what is the secret of your happiness?
She said in a voice soft and chirpy
There is one person only, and mind you only one, who can ever make you happy
Know this oh innocent one before you turn blue
That person is you.
