A boring job is made easier by watching the birds.

Starling Bomb

Starlings graze
The new mown lawn
Like one of them
Had stepped on a landmine
A thousand
Bits of black
Explode into the air,
Wheel on a dime
And settle on
A wire,
Tense, watchful
Waiting for someone
To make the next move.

Birds lend themselves to be watched. Like bumblebees and spiders, their industriousness and intensely focused attention to the task at hand somehow seems fascinating. They always seem to have purpose, where mankind seems always to be seeking for it. I've learned practically everything I know from them.

Delightful image of the birds' explosively sudden stirring.

A vivid and perfect image . . . my crows this morning have "exploded" in just this way.
