They Came
all was s i l e n c e when they came for youstanding unbent and tall amidst the straggles
scattered like bits of word to season the world,
I know they saw you as a giant humanly defiant
of all the odds and blocks Life always let down to fall
just hosts of ghosts to haunt a passing now,
slender as a willow by a river you stood so tall
your shadow grew providing shade where little was to be found
I will always recall the promise I made myself keep
and the prayer I say for you each night just before sleep
waves me away somewhere, the sound of wind and wings
remembering the things we said and thought were here to last
we learned the river is always moving past to shore
of everything that came to be yet is no more,
I drew your image deep into my view
a l l was silence, when they came for you...
