unspoken jars

hoarding words

for another day

for snappier comebacks

pickling phrases
acid retorts
bittersweet farewells

for nothing

and no one

words unused

sentences and poems
unsung

like forgotten jars

of beetles

collected in summer meadows

their air holes

clogged up

dead and stale
on a numb tongue

Well written and absolutely true. "Next time, I'll know just what to say."

Great title and after reading the poem it totally fits. I think I have some of these jars, really enjoyed this piece.

This takes me back to my grandmother's dark dirt cellar, the rows of fruit and vegetables she had preserved and canned, and when she died never to be opened.
