I have a new grandson and found a music box that plays this old song.  I tried to write this for a child, something he might easily understand and appreciate when he is a few years older, perhaps even inspiring him to a love of words and music.

"Beautiful Dreamer"

For Cole               September 10, 2012

Each night we turn the key and play

This old refrain that you've made new,

A lullaby and the prayer we say

To bless and keep you, watch over you,

Falling asleep in your beautiful dreams.

What they are you can't yet say,

But here in your innocence it seems

We find our own, and in some way

It's you bless us, and we who seem

To hear with our hearts your every dream.

And oh my child, the long night through

What beautiful dreams we have of you.

It seems to me that you said one time that you couldn't write rhyming poems. I believe that you were mistaken.

I have several grandchildren of varying ages and yet they still amaze me in so many different ways, but as babies they were all so beautiful and I could spend hours just watching them as they slept your poem brought all this back to me so I thank you not only for the poem but also for the memories~Graham.

I have yet to experience the wonder of grandchildren but I hope and pray for that privilege one day. Your poem will keep my heart warm till that wonderful day happens.
