This is an outline, the notes for a longer poem I was asked to write for a collection. It follows the highway through town, one intersection at a time, from the maternity hospital to the old cemetary.
highway from alpha to omega
1. Entering the system on a spring morning
bassinet strapped into the backseat
aren't we the lucky ones?
crossing the river and the railroad
along medieval battlelines
2. Are we there yet?
holding on to the football, looking out
the car window
the field gravel under the water mountain and the coach's whistle
moms and weeds cheering
3. I call the meeting to order
city hall commerce as usual
seconding that motion
we'll expand the exhibition grounds
all roads to lead to here
4. On one bank the silicon companies
on the other the quiet houses
pine woods and dog walks
maple leaves dancing in autumn sun
slow steps along the speeding artery
5. Candles afloat in the pond
a november evening
ashfed grass and sleeping flowerbeds
a singing in the bare branches
a background hum of the motorway
