Snowed In With Guo Xi

Guo Xi was a Northern Song Dynasty painter, known for

ethereal landscapes of mountains and rivers.

"Snow Mountain" near the north window,

The view unchanged for a thousand years,

And all day and night heavy snow settling

Where it falls, filling furrows and leveling

The slopes from where the lower boughs

Of pines are leaning against them as though

New roots are needed to bear such weight,

And when it finally almost stops the wind

Lifts the last into a mist fine as chalk dust,

Distance and definition erased , all simplified

Into a landscape even I could paint, leaving

The canvas blank but for a few brushstrokes,

Calligraphy of bird tracks making the poem.

Thank you for this portrait. As a Midwesterner spending too much time in L.A. I've missed the gentle snow you've described.

That's the thing about snow--it simplifies, simplifies, simplifies, erasing all irregularities and smoothing things out like a freshly ironed sheet.

As always, evocative thoughts and skillful poem-making.

As you know I love winter and snow but a March snow storm is just simply unwelcome. Your poem opened my heart to that late storm.
