Re Boston . . .

Several days ago I posted some thoughts, ending in a question, on the Forum (under the Open Discussion topic).  Almost as if in answer, yesterday a student was arrested at my local high school for having bomb making materials and several completed bombs.  I live in a small town in middle America and such a thing is unprecedented, but no longer unexpected.  Any thoughts that you would care to share would be most welcome.

I always want to know why. You can't excuse people who do such things, but they have to have reasons for doing them. Why would a kid make bombs? Why would a kid shoot up an elementary school? It doesn't do us, or them, or the next ones coming along, any good to say, "Well, he's always been rotten." Nobody's always been rotten. What happened? Was there something we should (or should not) have done?

As much as I love the Internet (for poetbay and many other sites I frequent regularly), I think it has unfortunately become a catalyst for persons who are up to no good. Terrorists can easily conspire and band together on the 'Net now, and I understand that the recipe for just about any type of explosive device is easy googled.

I know that every generation exaggerates when it claims that its contemporaries are meaner and less ethical than any before them, but sometimes it does seem that humanity has lost its way here in the 21st century. Of course, there are millions of decent, humane people in the world--let's hope that they remain a majority.
