Inspired by "I, too, sing America", by Langston Hughes.

I, too, salute America

I am the young, grown up fellow.
I used to go to the back door
To see the back of their friends,
but I have sung secretly, and worked well, and now I am a man.

Today, I've seen the sun come up behind the hills and I've talked to persons that were once strangers
And they'll say,
"come on in,"
Tomorrow

I used to slam the back door in order to see their backs but I've grown up
and now I'm a man

Besides, the flag has come up and salutes the world

Today - I, too, am alive.

Today- I, too, salute America

I find the third stanza very curious here... In my mind's eye, I see the slamming of the back door startling the people so they would then turn towards the back door, but instead it says it's done to 'see their backs.' Is it focusing on their oblivious nature, even to the slamming of the door?
