The Caterpillar

I came across a tiny, green caterpillar
eating fresh summer leaves,
I watched him for hours, waiting for the lesson;

"We don't change by trying to be what we're not,
but by being fully what we are,
we don't change by looking at the future,
but by living in the present",

As a gentle breeze swayed his little body to-and-fro,
he silently continued;

"when I am fully all that I can be in the present moment,
I begin to feel ready inside
to pass onto the next moment",

He crawled up a new branch, arching and extending,
I watched closely, and realised;
the fullness of the present leads up by itself
into the newness of the future,
today flowers into tomorrow when it is fully today
not when it pretends to be already tomorrow,

The caterpillar, reaching a new leaf, began to munch anew,
his only aim, in this moment, to eat and grow bigger,
he trusts nature, and befriends time,
he enjoys life crawling amongst leaves,
just as much as he will enjoy flying from flower to flower,

"change takes place by not worrying about it,
by not trying to force it, by not imposing or seeking it,
the stronger the present, the brighter the future",

He knows tomorrow he will wake up to a new world,
soon, that tomorrow will be a chrysalis,
one day, tomorrow will be a butterfly.

I spend a lot of time (when I'm out) looking at the insect world and marveling about their way of life... this made me feel the beauty. I particularly liked the lines :

"We don't change by trying to be what we're not,
but by being fully what we are,
we don't change by looking at the future,
but by living in the present",

- so much truth to these lines.

A gentle reminder of mindfulness.

As an afficionado of insects, that much aligned group, I enjoyed this. Some caterpillars, I think, are achingly beautiful. I also liked it Taoist-like message that change happens naturally--just go with the flow.
