Tigers and Bears

Tigers and bears under bed covers,
a grotto filled with a lot of fun,
nightdresses bunched to the knees
sitting on the landing
peering through the minstrel gallery
watching finery and plumes
that curled around the chandelier.
Giggles and dipping fingers,
snatching vol au vents
watching sobrani ladies
choose colours, peacock blue.
damask table cloths
watching silver shoes,
sneaking an arm through,
first sip of champagne,
giggles bubbling up.
Daddy picks you up
hiccupping bye,
strange kisses from red lips,
under covers, tightly tucked,
just the lingering sound
of music playing and
gurgles of fun tickling toes.

To have known such innocence then and be able to write of it in such evocative detail now is a remarkable and precious thing. I wish I had such memories.

This poem's a lot of fun, Elle. I enjoy the sense of stealth, the rich descriptions, the mood of excitement that sustains throughout. Applause!
