career advice

so I tell my kids a story
a funny story from way back when

but instead of peels of laughter
a solemn silence fills the room

"I will never tell a living soul"
one of them says, her voice quivering

"Mom, are you crying"
the other one whispers and touches my hand

oh well, I guess stand-up
comedy is not for everyone
