An Open Letter To LaLaa
Aside from several vague criticisms for which you provide no details or examples, you raise the question of why PoetBay hasn't grown. I have access to no statistics that would prove or disprove your point, though in looking back it does seem that there are fewer members here now than five years ago.
Perhaps there is a kind of "natural selection" at work . . . having posted on several other sites over the years I can say that PoetBay is a unique culture, that without exception people here share their art and appreciation of others' efforts with grace and generosity and often gratitude. Many of us post far more comments than poems, and that is as it should be and suggests that perhaps PoetBay is more dynamic than you credit it. If you read a week's postings, poems and comments, you will find that even for a relatively small group there is diversity here.
Last year a poet who shall remain nameless came here from another well-known and culturally opposite site, posted some comments that may even have been well-intentioned but were also arrogant and dismissive . . . he soon disappeared because rather than disparage him we ignored him and he soon disappeared. What I am suggesting is that the nature of PoetBay's ethos and culture is somewhat self-limiting - not everyone fits in here. I prefer it that way, and perhaps that makes me elitist though rather I think it is discriminating . . . we choose our friends carefully here and for the most part we all are friends.
You have been a member for three years and have posted no poems or comments, so in a real sense you've passed on the opportunity to help PoetBay grow. I hope you will decide to join us . . . you will find friends here if you seek them.
