"If You Would Look For Me"
For my children, when the time comes.
Now I go, but have not gone.
Archibald MacLeish, "Ship's Log"
If you would look for me there is no path
To follow. Always I tread lightly, turned
Over no stones, broken no branches in my
Passing, disturbed no thing from its place
And its purpose. Do no less, and no more.
Look for the hawk, walk a way under its wings;
Cross over the stream, see how it heals every
Trespass; listen to what the wind says to you
And follow where it goes. Answer the owl with
A silent prayer of thanks for your knowing now
How life goes on beyond wherever we are.
You will come to a clearing where the deer
Lie down, they will not startle if you stay
Quietly. Look and listen. I will be the last
Red fox there among the tree shadows, the
Hooded and tethered falcon finally set free.
