Autism (not what you think)

My son, special, wonderful,
a high achiever despite
all that he had to hold,
perfect in my eyes.

I recall his sweetness
holding me when I was
at my lowest, he has instinct
which many say that
autistic children do not.

I refused to have him classified,
right or wrong, I did what I did
and there have been problems
I would like, if there had been not.

Yet as a single mother
I got him through school,
I fought hard, I got him to university

He is clumsy, laughs too loud
holds my hand at times
we share a love of words,
we love watching shows.

The world would be worse
you know, without the special ones
I held him, loved him and
I will always worry

It is a gift and a curse
but mostly a gift
and the worst?
Well, let me show
you the sweetest boy,
who took his soldiers arm
and walked beside
his mother.

O this is so tender, so special, it is so filled with love and pride that I can hardly bear to read it, yet I have done even when not part of this site

This poem broke my heart. In the best of ways, taught me love in a dimension I have never known ...

The poem is painstakingly honest in every line and in form,
just stunning, as deep as it is open.

The joys and struggles of the two in this piece is a phenomenal read of the strength of character.

" He is clumsy, laughs too loud
holds my hand at times
we share a love of words,
we love watching shows. "

What beauty. Love.

The love shines through this piece like a beacon, it sounds like the both of you stand proud without a care what the world thinks, refreshing. My daughter works with autistic people and it is enriching to hear her/their stories, your last stanza speaks volumes.

This is beautiful. I work with children on the spectrum every day, and none can be classified into a single category... nor should any child for that matter. We are all individuals, unique and viable. He is one lucky son to have a mother who used her instincts to guide him through life, rather than read out of tests books. Touching sentiment in a another well written poem. :)

This is so tender, compassionate, heart warming! I think we are talking about two very different and very special people. Your words truly reach deep into the heart.

As a mom, I feel the deep love coming through this... challenges are just that, they don't really impede on a person's temperament and nature, despite society's eye on them... that's what I take from these words, we are who we are and we all have our strengths and weaknesses... I can't help but feel admiration for the son and the mother in this... beautifully put through.
