the ship in the poem is the titanic. the poem is about how all of america was consumed in sorrow for the terrible accident. how as one we mourned and how as one we stood and went on.

but we did not lose our will.

there was a time long past.
when someone played last post.
and no one knew.

what had befallen the crew.
what had turned their ship to a ghost.
and given them their last.

when the wreckage was found.
all sound was held fast.
and all of the mind was broken.

a few empty words were spoken.
and the coffins were tied to mast.
and all hearts were bound.

the web contained all.
encompased their mind and heart.
and we were as one in our sorrow.

and as one we looked to the morrow.
hoped for a new start.
we did not drop to the ground and crawl.

instead we stood straight.
and remade our courage.
we lost the ship and the crew.

but we did not lose our will.

If not for the Titanic, I could not have been born.. It changed the fate of so many.
A very good theme Ian, from the american eyes.
