cat and mouse

cat and mouse

snick of latch
mouse stops
heart
double-pounds

'tis door
behind which
lives -- cat
eyes -- claws vie for

sharpness
loose upon rooms in which
mouse
prowls for food

cross town
whistle blows
end of -- work day
for

stiffs in the mill

play their own game
of -- cat and mouse
of pawns and kings
-- king's subordinates

wielding whips
of disregard - artifice
and acrimony
ego's will be done

risen to height of
their own ineptitude
playing middle-level
-- schemes

holding down slaves
under thumbs
borrowed from
upper-level lackeys

dangerous -- game they play
tears that are shed
all songs of heaven cannot
allay

drudgery -- drudgery
and shame
profit of
all . . .

now cats and mice
figure
it natural
-- their game

while human play
unnatural at best
bestial
at worst

evolution is a slow
-- wheel.
