HOPE IN THE EYES OF HOPELESSNESS
There she sat on a stoop feeding hungerAn elderly woman poised graciously
I acknowledged her presence in passing
Ready to be of service if she beckoned
Hope in the eyes of hopelessness
Casting a shadow so the sunlight couldn't enter
Wearing blinders as if to say, who really cares
Holding on by a thread too afraid to grab the rope
Couldn't help but notice the shininess of her shoes
Hope in the eyes of hopelessness
Where was home when life was worth living I wondered
What circumstances caused her personal best to crash
Did a family exist in search of her name and number
Her speech from the podium presented in sign language
Hope in the eyes of hopelessness
There she sat on a stoop in angelic wings
Earth in the mirror of heaven sharing mysteries
Society viewed her as a storm's pasing phase
I knew who she was as she held my inner soul
Hope in the eyes of hopelessness
