piecing

piecing

piecing together
years . . . for -- years
try to recall
whom I was with

-- and where

what we were doing
and when
for why did we do it
-- for how long

attempt to recall who
I am -- midst all
the rest
piecing tears and smiles together

gathering
minutes -- minutes at
a time
turning to -- hours

-- to days
months to -- years
volume gets turned way
-- up

with

crescendos
diminuendos
4/4 time
rapid staccatos

silent -- holds
those pauses
for causes
only holder knows

accumulating assemblage
events that occur
placing them in lines -- linear
points

chasing my tail
-- moments of calm
drum beats in distance
harbingers troubadour's melodies

standing just in front
of -- me
sweat rolling from
his -- several faces

but with one -- voice
piecing together
notes of his songs
a song at a time

leaves me breathless
awestruck
choosing to be
peaceful

gathering
piecing together
years
-- for years.

Very skillfully written. I like the Emily Dickinson style dashes. It seems to me a very beautiful poem about taking the hundreds of experiences from our lives and trying to see how it all fits.

Over the years that becomes an awesome thought. People who have touched us in some way, who have loved us, or betrayed us, all have a place in our memory. A poem that can make us all wonder at all that has been. :-)
