Darkness

Darkness falls on our family tonight,
small in number, slight in figures,
I am the exception to the rule,
I play music by ear, and sight and maths
were never my raison d'être.

My father reads latin, by rote
he repeats his school prayer by heart,
there won't be much more of that
as darkness falls tonight

This is a nicely written poem, especially the first stanza. The lasttwo lines left me wondering. They're a little ominous.

It is a sore, a wound spoken of here,
it hurts... but it will heal in someway, the poem suggests that it is not the end of things, just the culmination of the pain.. and so, it will get better after the pain
that's how I see this poem

Somber, but dignified and majestic. I love the winter solstice because it means that the days will begin to lengthen again. May the darkness break and the sun brighten and warm you and your family once again.

Darkness may fall on the night, but the love and traditions linger on. I find it a beautiful scene that your words have described.
Merry Christmas.

Sombre, gentle, resignation, dignity and love all come to mind when reading your graceful words. May the gentle winds of time help guide both you and your family through the darkness of this moment.
