the problem with billy

aren't they always called billy?
or johnny, or jimmy--
in bethesda, in bakersfield, in charlotte.
and aren't they always blond as corn
and cool as february.
my metaphors fail me.
but what is there to say
about billy, or johnny, or jimmy
that has not been said?
and don't they always pull your stomach
inside out
and leave you holding your heart,
dumb as a tree stump,
and lonely as they day before you knew their name?

Well done. I don't think that your metaphors failed you.
