Invitation

for Nils . . .

Whoever looks on this
Loses himself in eternity

Li Po, "On A Picture Screen"

Come after spring rains, when the shallow stream

Fills and flows, rising and tumbling, at first

Cloudy and after several sunny days then cold

And clear, finding its voice again after winter's

Stillness, passing over now and not around

The stepping stones, straightening the bend,

Shore shadows giving way to shimmers of light.

Follow the ridge and ledge of the steep cut bank

Where it declines to the cottonwoods beginning

To leaf, across the bank of small smooth stones

To the edge of the water, kneel and gather it

Into your cupped hands, and simply drink,

Knowing one more time, as I do  after all these years

Of my comings and goings, the long lost years

And these late found days, how everything begins

Again, in this moment and this place.  In you.

My friend... I cannot express the peace and fulfillment I feel in reading this beyond the word, meditation. I will use your poem as an enlighted pathway in my poor practice if this demanding art in which I am sadly a now and then novice practioner.

This brings to mind Heraclitus, in more ways than one, but in particular, "no man ever steps in the same river twice," and "the path up and down are the same." Both have a Buddhist tone, which is why the quotes came to mind I suppose.

But I'm using quotes instead of my own words. I say, a gentle journey begins and ends with friendship.

The magic you tried to dictate in the poem didn't exactly touch me. A decent poem, but just missing something. Keep on keeping on!
