a table for five on the waterfront in corfu

~

some time, i cannot say when, but i know where,

i would like to indulge in a little social affair,

a gathering of literati, a few of my fav idols,

nothing fancy, a brunch to indulge in poetic idylls.

we would discourse, the four of them, plus me,

of course, over wine, or maybe rose-hip tea,

the ways of verse, at least among the world ionian

(as opposed to verse among the world tanzanian),

a world remarkably conducive to verse and tale,

listening to my sappho and your homer regale

us with wit and scope, and virgil and aeschylus.

what fun, gathered round a table by the sea,

a conversation over food and wine, and gentleness.

Yes, this flows well and we at BirdBrains sense that it was enjoyable for thee to write.
Inspired by the comment of J.R. below, we suggest it would be enjoyable to meet the Thunderbirds also – or perhaps even in combination with thy famous five.

It would be fun, but they are all so old. I will not pretend to know them all, although I do know that Virgil was one of the Thunderbirds :) Sorry I could not resist that. I enjoyed the idea of this and wondered who i would invite.

Interesting choice of companions . . . Sappho would have been an interesting fifth, or perhaps you are she.

Ha ha! A new form is born, thirteen lines, five couplets, followed by a concluding triplet. You've followed it perfectly. Professor Elliot woud be proud (and I'm flattered), but what should it be called? A sonnette? That's awfully cheesy. It doesn't matter. Enjoy the wine and the company.

What a beautifully rhymed and flowing poem this is! The idea of a conversation with the most gifted of poets, and food and wine and gentleness is a subject worth reflecting upon. Great poem. :)
