Summer in the city

The window's shut. Rain strokes the glass,
and I am sitting behind it, thinking.

Remembering how it was, in this other, exotic land,
with the very hot days and the very warm nights.

The buzz from the TV screen, the conversations,
the laughs and screams from the street,
the freedom from the duty.

The walks on the promenade, the awkward encounters
with familiar faces you wish you'd never met;
the music blasting a bit too loud from the speakers
signalling the beginning of another summer night in the city.
