Ashe's belief and your belief are not different. One is talking the open eye's dream (Ashe) and one is talking simple dream (you). But both are talking about dreams.
God is not for relieving pain or giving paradise or favoring someone.... When you say God, then you must say "I-lessness" and Ashe' you can take that Condition as Godly and absolute "I-less" being is the only God, which is not possible in this age of Kali. God is neutral, it is not going to help or harm anyone. But, "seems" to favor those who has Love and Devotion. In that sense, we also say Love is God, or Truth is God. So, God is similar to as Love or Truth do not care if some hater is getting hurt or liar is getting punished. They have to stuck to their rules. Hence, God is just for some and "Un"just for some.
Someone dying with cancer or a little kid is dying or ailing with cancer – it has nothing to do with God. It is the simple chemistry of our chemical bodies. Some have good compositions and others not. It is result of Karma, which is nothing but our consciousness for others. We believe in rebirth and souls (even there are lot of evidences for this and science is mum as they can't do it in a lab). Similar rules applied to Accident or any unfortunate event with someone. These are all bound by Law of Nature and Law of Karma. These two laws cannot be escaped.
God's existence is questioned? - For this you need to change the concept of God first. Then you will find God is everywhere, only our perception is incorrect. Everything in the creation is "I-less", and hence God, so we can say God is all-pervading. Only living beings having Karma bound consciousness, and lose the grip of state of "I-lessness" and hence lose God or even Discard the existence of that being / state in extreme cases. Regarding Paradise, so I can say as per my discussions of thousand years old sacred books and millions of Rishis, Sages, that it is in Heart, when you achieve the supreme Blissful Love to reside there forever, if, Karma are completely burnt and soul is free to happily reside with "I-lessness". You may refer to some literature from oriental/Indian thoughts/philosophy on this.

As long as we are making lists, let me try one of my own:
1. How do you know he cares?.
2. How can he be fair and be non-corruptible? Which child with cancer will he save today? Which one is more worthy?
3. What is noble and just about him when innocents die everyday in ridiculous wars and so many suffer hunger and pain?
4. Give me an example of his trustworthiness?
5. I have never seen any evidence of his existence or appearance.
6. I can't argue that he might not have let you down because I don't know your life, but he's let a lot of other people down when they needed him most.
7. How can you know he doesn't lie when we haven't heard a word he's said? The Bible, as we all know, was not written by him.
8. How many times has he eased the pain of those who cry? So many desperate people are crying, perhaps it's too many.
9. I see no evidence of his love in this world.
10. This is a fairy tale invented by men. There is no evidence that anyone lives anywhere after death.

I am glad that you feel he can comfort you. I respect your beliefs, but I couldn't resist making my own list, right or wrong I have a right to my doubts and beliefs too.

Someone or some people don't care

"I love him because he's fair."
Someone or some individuals were unfair

"I love him because he's noble and just."
Someone or some humans were not genuine nor just.
To be genuine enough is the only law everything else happens by itself. Justice is to be true to your nature?

"I love him because he's one who we can trust."
You cannot trust humans I do not trust myself either! :D ;)

"I love him because he's always around"
You left me / they left me / I feel alone perhaps separated from the whole and vulnerable?

"I love him because he won't let me down."

People disappointed me

"I love him because he does not lie."

I will believe you if you prove that I can believe you.

"I love him because he eases our pain when we cry."

Crying has a function.

" I love him because he loves me."

I don't like to feel unloved and if you don't love me I hate you as well?

"I love him because he'll let me live in paradise for eternity."

I fear death I cannot make life be better but I can hope for something else while living this life. Become absent. (?)
