in trees
in treesthere's a whispering
-- among trees
language -- ancient
dialogue timeless
conversation trees
-- understand
roots drinking water
earth eating -- plants
precision of making leaves
-- on twigs
as roots speak
to other roots
about what goes on
in their world round
about forests of yore
-- giant ancestors cut down
so men could build
-- roads
plant fields
fence in land
trees watch
-- unnoticed
and speak to one
another
from deepest forest glade
to peach orchards in Georgia
dominion of man
over all things on earth
trees mark the tally
-- man hasn't done so good
as husband of Nature
trees know this
Nature does as well-!
there's whispering
among trees
and there's an end
on it -- man's domination
trees just watched
as man fudged the game
and trees could never
run.
