The friendly separation
you smiledbut the smile never reached
across the table
nor did it make my knees go weak
as they so often do
around you
you laughed
but it was so fake
that even you
could not find it funny
stretching the time,
to where you had to leave
you burned your hand on the stove
and wouldn't let me bandage it for you
you smiled and said
everything was all right
and laughed pebbles at me again
hid well beneath your coat
and closed the door behind you
I thought I could hear your cheering in the driveway
relieved
that I was no longer a required company
