I RETURN

I return to a place I want to forget

Remembering like it was yesterday

The pain still so real

Faces I see in the field

I return to the battle I want to forget

Watching my friends fall

Hearing the Leautentant make the call

Standing here alone I close my eyes

Seeing bodies all around

Machine guns firing what a horrible sound

I return to this place to be at peace

I return to this place to say goodbye

Close my eyes I cry

I often wonder how I survived

I return to this place to let go

Allowing my pain to show

Tears continue to flow

Gentle touch I hear its ok

Your friends would want you to live on

Honor their memory is what you do

I return to this place its time to heal

A powerful work. I was glad that you used the word 'Survived'. That is the word , soldiers use in when interviewed. Those who sent them off to war - are the ones who talk of Vets. Due to my age 62. I have known those why survived world wars one and two. And of the to many wars since.

Never will I applaud warfare, but this poem of the surviver from the hell of war makes me feel so sad, so little, so nothing but, a listening ear ...
