This was written for a prompt in my writing club to write something that represents the plot of a story we're familiar with. I chose "Siddhartha," by Hermann Hesse.
monastic controlled breaths
and mantra recitations
under strictest rule -
i left all, 'cept my dearest friend
then he left me
running through life,
bouncing between
spiritual and carnal existences,
i finally found peace
in the divinity of the holy River -
ever flowing, I found stillness in life
and now must I relinquish my only son
into the world of suffering
so that he, too, might find his own path
as I did so many years ago
having left my family and homeland
pray to the river for guidance,
the river which ever flows,
rhythm and source of life
