the heat of snow

Did you know that they find
those frozen to death
often naked
clothes strewn about?

Did you know it's said
the last you feel
before you're solid
is heat?

searing heat
mind-numbing heat

I haven't died
yet

that I noticed
and never of snow

but I do know
that snow burns

not cold
hot

a blue flame
flickers
out

Startling paradox about the fact that opposites may not be so opposite after all. The poem left me trying to think of a counterpart, something that we all think of as flaming hot, but can also be intensely cold. All that comes to mind are abstractions--hot rage can sometimes feel bitterly frigid.
