NOT FORE THE SELF TO SAY

I is not the self to say

If or if not the life were

Worth well remembering

Or forgotten

That's down to those

Remaining

To say yes or no

It were or were not

Something I've thought much about as I've grown older. Most memories of my grandparents and parents are not of moments that were consciously planned or grand occasions but the simple ordinary things in ordinary days; things that no doubt seemed mundane at the time but for one reason or another have endured.

I think a father especially is both more and less than his children know, know of him. My family is of German heritage on both sides and the men tended to reticence, reserve and stoicism . . . only years later have they come to revelation in my remembering.
