coils

there was once a pond,
a perfectly round pond surrounded by bulrush
and guarded by an old willow.
on the liquid surface, here and there,
one could see perfumed heads of water lilies,
who had a very important role:
they were meant to pin down into the lake
the sky's reflection
so that the fish...
oh, I forgot to mention the fish.
yes, there was also a golden koi in that pond,
old as time and all alone,
with no other being to keep him company.
now, where was i?
ah, yes.
the water lilies were meant to pin down into the lake
the sky's reflection
so that the old koi would swim among the reflections of stars,
trying to guess if the fragrance of their light was stronger
than that of his shadow slithering on the bottom of the pond,
caressing the noble mud of time.
stars talked to him in some unknown language
loving the splash caused by the drop of their words
into the mirror of the few scales still hanging like broaches
on the koi's skin,
while the fish swam slowly among the water lilies' shanks,
weaving majestically around them
his ponderings on his pond of wavy rings –
there was once a pond,
a perfectly round pond...

This is very evocative Lilly, a beautiful scene, not just the images but within it a kind of Oriental contemplation that water lilies and koi have inspired for thousands of years. I can see this, painted with shimmering translucent brushstrokes on a silk scroll, the poem's elegant calligraphy.
