This modern sea shanty is dedicated to Jamsbo.

Wave Goodbye

I found myself in Portsmouth town,
A country boy by the restless sea,
My heart was broken, I wore a frown,
And cursed her who gave me liberty.

Chorus

Listen boys, listen to the waves,
Hear their heartfelt woes,
To true love we are slaves,
But the tide takes away our beaus.

I quenched my hurt in many inns,
I drank the health of many a wench,
But the price of my many sins
Was to stand before the Bench.

Chorus (again)

The ruddy magistrate peered at me,
Asked how I was to plead,
I said: 'Sir, Love has done the felony,
For it's caused my heart to bleed'.

Chorus (again)

But the Beak knew nought of Love,
And after short and sweet deliberation,
Bellowed out from high above:
'Guilty as charged, two years' transportation'.

Chorus (again)

I was taken down, taken down,
Returned to Portsmouth town,
And from there I sailed away
To the loveless land of Botany Bay.

Chorus (last time)

I love it. Many of us here have convict blood and we all made that long journey. Perhaps the sea is in me. Genetic memory is a real thing. Thank you so much for this :)
